We Could’ve Been the NDP of the Right

I’ll be honest, Rachel Notley comes across as pretty decent person. I’d invite her to my summer time BBQ. She’d show up with a great potato salad or slaw and everyone would have a good time. The other thing I like about her is that she has principles. She sticks with them whether she is in a party of a few seats or a powerful majority.

I absolutely disagree with her politics and socialism on principle. At best, I believe the role of the government should be very limited. The government is generally terrible and can’t do the simplest things well.

Now, to be fair, the NDP government hasn’t done a thing yet so I will reserve judgment until they try to socially engineer us into oblivion. Then I’ll start kicking and screaming. I’ll make a prediction right now though.

It’s going to be tough and in 4 years I’ll be yelling I told you so.

What I am going to kick and scream about today are the PCs and the Wildrose party. I would have preferred a PC government to NDP 10 times out of 10. Even more so for the Wildrose party. Even with all its faults I would take the watered down, weak-willed, milquetoast conservatism of either of those parties over the socialism of the NDP.

Remember when Danielle Smith and legend-in-his-own-mind campaigner Vitor Marciano said they didn’t want the Wildrose to be the NDP of the right? What they were really saying was “Let’s sell out our principles for power.” Well, it turns out you don’t have to do that.

The NDP didn’t win because Alberta went socialist. It won because Rachel Notley comes across as a real person trying to do her best to serve Alberta and she was a stark contrast to Prentice and Jean who practically leave a slime trail wherever they go.

Albertans wanted a change and they wanted nothing to do with PCs and Wildrose because they stand for nothing but gathering power.

If Danielle Smith hadn’t crossed the floor she would be Premier right now. Albertans wanted change and Wildrose was the natural choice.

Then they went and messed it all up. It reminds me of the famous planet of the Apes scene. “You Maniacs! You Blew it  Up!”

Now we have 4 years of socialism. I put the blame firmly on the PCs and the Wildrose for leaving behind their conservative values and not knowing how to campaign.

Famous campaign educator Morton Blackwell has said it best ” You owe it to your ideology to learn how to win.”

Wildrose, you have 4 years to learn how to win so you can undo the damage done by NDP.

As for me, I won’t be letting the NDP get away with anything. I will remain vigilant.
